Urban Potato

Sri Lanka

For Christmas we went with our good friend Winslow to Sri Lanka to get a tan, and get away from the shopping frenzy.

Buddha #1:

It is considered rude to photograph a Buddha with another person, especially if that person has his or her back to the Buddha (as would be the case if you were taking a vacation photo of someone standing in front of him). As long as you remember this simple rule you can snap away to your heart's content.

Of all the Buddha's we saw, one stood out as being freshly painted. We learned that this was because a tourist actually climbed into the Buddha's lap to get her picture taken. This is profoundly rude and required that the Buddha be stripped down and completely repainted. It is the only present-day paint in the whole temple. Nobody would say what the Sri Lankan government did to the tourist.

Ok, one more and I'll stop. It is also rude to look directly into the Buddha's eyes. In fact, the person who paints the eyes of the Buddha does so by looking in a mirror, so as not to look directly into the statue's eyes.
